CES 2009: Dodge Journey to get OnStar-like features this summer

On our final night in Vegas, Hughes Telematics invited us over to talk about their work in... well... telematics. Among their demo vehicles was a Dodge Journey outfitted with what is essentially Chrysler's version of OnStar. The Journey will be Chrysler's first product with the service and should be available this summer.

We're not certain what name the new service will get, but it essentially offers the same basic services General Motors' vehciles have. Press a button on the rearview mirror and talk with an assistant at Hughes' own call center to unlock doors and provide directions. The system will also alert rescue agencies of an crash.

Pricing and exact date of availability are both unknown. Hughes reps said that their company is in talks with Chrysler to develop much more elaborate systems with many more features, some of which we were able to check out. We'll be able to post more on that later. But until then you can refresh on what Hughes Telematics told us at CES 2008.

Detroit 2009: Faster Pussycat - Jaguar XFR pounces on Bonneville, hits 225 mph!

Click above for high-res image gallery of the Jaguar XFR Bonneville car

In its spare time while reinventing the company and settling in with a new owner, Jaguar's boffins somehow found time to take their new XFR to the Bonneville Salt Flats for a top speed run last November.

The Paul Gentilozzi-driven XFR had been modified with the appropriate safety gear (roll cage, fire suppression system, etc.), along with a sizable low-mounted rear spoiler and a derestricted ECU that allowed the supercharger to yield around 600 horsepower thanks to a bit more boost. So-equipped, the 503-horsepower sedan blew through the double-ton to top out at 225.675 miles-per-hour, solidly trouncing the previous Jaguar land speed record of 217.1 mph set by an XJ220 at Nardo back in 1992 with Martin Brundle at the wheel. For reference, the standard XFR is electronically limited to 155 mph.

Incredibly, the Bonneville run was completed on stock Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires, and the Rocketsports-prepared XFR was still registering a bit of wheelspin at that speed.
Check out the high-res, high-speed gallery below and the press release after the jump.

2009 Ford Mondeo Tuned By Reiger, Elevated To “Shaggin’ Wagon” Status

German auto tuning haus, Reiger, has released an aftermarket styling package for the 2009 Ford Mondeo, successfully upgrading it from grocery getter to gangster getter [alright, so maybe I'm exaggerating for the sake of alliteration, but it's a cool mod kit regardless]. Updated without being ridiculously over accessorized [here's to looking at you, Honda aftermarket outfitters], the Reiger body kit for the Ford Mondeo features a new front lip, side skirts with custom cut out vents, and a rear diffuser - available in three different variations [depending on the exhaust configuration]. Not visible on the exterior, additional enhancements include a KW tuned coilover suspension and ECU-modifying SKU chip upgrades.

Nice Price Or Crack Pipe: 30,000-Mile 1957 Triumph TR3 For 45 Grand? [Nice Price Or Crack Pipe]

How much is too much for a car? When is the price nice, and when is it time to take your sorry self to Booth Numbah Two for the crack pipe?

The $45,000 AMX came close to getting a Nice Price rating from the voters, but fell short by 5%. Today we'll be checking out a totally different car with the same lofty price: what the seller claims is the finest unrestored '57 Triumph TR3 in the world. It's rust free, the original interior is still there, and it looks pretty good (considering the photos are blurry and badly framed). We wish the seller had substituted more info about the car for the keyword spam, but he or she knows that Ford and BMW shoppers are actually looking for a Triumph! It's a car most of us would love to own, but what do you think of that price tag?
[Craigslist New York, go here when the listing gets flagged out of existence for the keyword spammage. Thanks to Monsterajr for the tip!]

Nike Air Max Light GT3 RS: Inspired By Porsche [Novelties]

What do you get when you cross two expressive companies like Porsche and Nike? You get a very interesting and very bright pair of Nike Air Max Light sneakers.

There are plenty of sneakerheads and there are plenty of Porsche fans out there, myself being one of both. So how exactly do you combine your love for both? Better yet, how do you color match your brand new Porsche GT3 RS with your favorite pair of Nikes?

Purchaze of Germany created four unique pairs of Nike Air Max Light GT3 RS’ with colorways inspired by the extreme colors of the most recent 997 Porsche GT3 RS. The four exterior color combinations of the Porsche are accurately portrayed on the shoes. In December of last year, Purchaze presented these unique pairs of sneakers to the Porsche racing staff who will wear them in upcoming races.

Unfortunately there is no plan to recreate these for the public, but with enough time and enough paint, you could recreate these killer sneakers yourself.

Motorcycle Customizer Recognizes Stolen Bike, Runs It Off The Road

In Salt Lake City, Utah, a man in an SUV observed a motorcycle ride past that he had helped build. Quickly and correctly identifying the bike as stolen, the man proceeded to run the motorcyclist off the road, informing him that the bike he was riding was stolen property. Apparently already fully apprised of the situation, the motorcyclist then proceeded to hijack a passing van with a woman and infant inside. The man then forced the woman to drive him to his house before letting her and the infant go without harm. Once released, the woman immediately returned to the scene and reported the incident to the authorities. Although the motorcyclist has not been found, police now have his name and several other identifying characteristics with which to track him down.

As far as the vigilante bike builder is concerned, police told The Salt Lake City Tribune that it’s highly unlikely he’ll be faced with any charges. Explained Salt Lake County sheriff Lt. Paul Jarosack, “He was doing what he thought was appropriate to stop the stolen motorcycle…A citizen has almost as much right as the police to effect arrest.”

Lexus Confirms HS 250h to be Unveiled in Detroit

lexus_hs250h_badge.jpg
Last year Toyota confirmed that a Lexus branded dedicated hybrid model would make its debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. Lexus has now confirmed that the new dedicated hybrid will be dubbed the HS250h.

The details are scarce about the new model although it is expected that the new Lexus hybrid will share some of, if not all of its mechanicals with the also new 2010 Toyota Prius. If the HS 250h in fact does use the same hybrid powertrain as the new Prius it will be the next-generation Hybrid Synergy with nickel-metal hydride battery packs. Unfortunately lithium-ion packs are still in development and will be added at a later date.

Stay tuned for all the details from the show next month.

The Obsidian SG-One: A $1.3 Million Dollar Mustang - Gallery & Video

“I call the car Obsidian,” says Matt Couper, owner of CoupeR Design. “It’s the name of a black volcanic rock, made from molten lava, that’s sharper than a surgeon’s scalpel. I thought it was appropriate.” Yeah, pretty appropriate.

Aside from the roof and the doors, this car is completely custom. The CouprR Design team spent over 10,000 man hours on it, and it shows. It’s totally flawless, perfect Cobra-black with only a few bits of chrome for the trim and the vent covers.

The vents, by the way, are all fully functional, all 6 of them (that’s not counting the ones on the hood bulge). The 2 hidden scoops on the front valence feed air to the superchargers, the 2 scoops on the front fender force air to the front disc brakes - same goes for the 2 scoops on the rear quarter, they force air to the rear brakes. I guess when you have 847hp, you need a lot of stopping power.

Yeah, you read correctly. This car has a mostly custom, twin-supercharged, 5.7-litre V8; and when the twin Rotrex superchargers are spinning they get the engine up to exactly 847bhp according to the dyno. 847 horsepower; and 770 lbs/f of torque.
Check out the pictures and video:
