Knight Rider: The Liveblog - Season 1, Episode 11

Last week when we left off, Mike and KITT were sent on a scavenger hunt by a kidnapper/terrorist who obviously never has any rollover minutes on his mobile phone. Anyway, one thing led to another and Mike rescued Ambassador Erykah Badu from the Chatty Kidnapper's clutches, only to go and get himself caught in the final ten minutes. Then, Knight Rider became Speed 3: Knight Rider's Writers Run Out of Ideas, as the bad guys loaded a bomb onto KITT and told Mike that he has to stay over 100 mph or go boom. Speaking of going "BOOM!", that's what happened to Carrie when one of ther FBI agents opened a booby-trapped door in the warehouse after they arrived, freeing actress Sydney Tamila Poitier from this KITT-shaped small-screen prison.

Day Turns Into Knight

MIKE AND KITT CONTINUE ON THEIR QUEST TO STOP A TERRORIST FROM DETONATING A NUCLEAR WEAPON AND KILLING THE AMBASSADOR--Mike and KITT are now transporting a bomb in the trunk of the car, but in order for it not to explode they must stay above 100 miles-per-hour. Trying to come up with a plan to disable the bomb, they load KITT onto the plane to buy some time and keep up their speed. Clinging to life, Rivai manages to give a clue to find where the terrorist is hiding. Meanwhile, Sarah receives some upsetting news about her dad.

Six Degrees of Automotive Separation – Jowett and Ferrari

Judging from the great responses to the Hemmings Six Degrees of Separation Challenge series so far, you all seem to share my concept of entertainment. But that’s not to say I’m so big in the breeches that I won’t accept a suggestion for the challenge, and thus, we have a thrown gauntlet from reader Patrick, who saw Jim Donnelly’s recent post on the Jowett Jupiter racing at Monterey and wanted to see if we could connect it in six degrees or less to Ferrari.

What made Patrick choose those two is beyond me, so hopefully Patrick has already figured out a path between the two and can enlighten us sometime before the end of the day. For the rest of you, give it a shot, and if you can dream up any challenges, let us know.

The rules, as always, are simple: A connection consists of one company owning another, merging with another or sharing another’s parts. The more obscure the connections, the better. Explain your connections, and if you need examples, check out our previous Hemmings Six Degrees of Automotive Separation Challenges.

Frenchman Fails To Cross English Channel By Bicycle, Still Manages To Make Times Headlines

On Sunday, Frenchman Stephane Rousson embarked on his flight across the English Channel in is privately-engineered pedal-powered airship. Inspired by the infamous midnight escape scene in Stephen Spielberg’s movie, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Rousson’s attempt was a life-long dream finally come to fruition. “When I was young, I saw the movie and watched the little guy pedalling on a bike flying in front of the moon with ET,” Rousson told The Times, “I always wanted to fly.”

Earlier that morning, Rousson had mounted his 16-foot helium filled blimp, the Miss Louise, with the intention of pedaling from Hythe to Wissant in under 8 hours. Unfortunately, strong winds forced Rousson to scrap his plans 11 miles in, “We were about three-quarters of the way across,” Rousson explained, “but the wind was flowing in the wrong direction for me to make it across.”

Taking his failure in stride, Rousson admitted, “The success is not with me but I have had so much fun. My legs are a little bit burnt and I’m sure tomorrow I will be feeling a little sad but I’ll have a few beers.”

When asked about future attempts, Rousson admitted that it wasn’t likely without the support of financial backers. “All my money has gone into achieving this over the past five years. I’m quite a bit in debt. If I found a lot of money I would definitely try again but I don’t have a large budget at the moment.”

The Standard of the World: How to Reinvent Cadillac

General Motors underwent an unprecedented “engineered” bankruptcy this summer. As it is sheds divisions right and left, historic nameplates are being discarded and the company that once had over 50% of the new car market has lost the recipe. So what’s to become of Cadillac in the future? It needs to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Rolls Royce, Bentley, and the relatively new upstart from Japan, Lexus.

A new commercial, titled “Reignition” is a great start, but you really can’t run a luxury division with three body styles of what are essentially the same car, and an upscale clone of a Chevrolet crossover. The two-seat XLR sports car will be discontinued shortly, as will the STS and the DTS. The Escalade will live on though as pointless as it may be seen by many because America can’t seem to get enough of these rolling excesses. It has, over the last decade, been a very successful product in terms of sales for what was once the Standard of the World. But does it send the right message? 1967 Datsun 411 Down On The Maui Street [Down On The Street Bonus Edition]

This is Down On The Street Bonus Edition, where we check out interesting street-parked cars in places other than the Island That Rust Forgot. You'd think Maui's humidity would be rough on old Japanese cars…

But this little Bluebird looks to have dodged the Rust Monster's fangs for decade after decade. Reader Chris was in Makawao and found what must be one of the nicest street-driven PL411s in the world. Here's what he has to say about it:

Hi,I was in Hawaii a few weeks ago and spotted this car on the island in Makawao,Maui.
I did a search on Jalopnik and it appears to be a Datsun 411 Bluebird. Very nice shape,
and for sale also. I've included a few pics,enjoy!
