If Biodiesel is in short supply where you live, why not make your own?

etruk 50Fuel alternatives are a hot topic around the web and around the globe. We have discussed many of the options here on this site that are being studied and that are seeking a share on the market place. It has even been mentioned that you could be making your own fuel at home. The designs to build your own still for ethanol or distillers for biodiesel are just a search away online. However some of the concern over building your own still may have just been eased by a UK company.

Etruk has designed and is selling online stills of varying sizes to appeal to those looking to make their own biodiesel at home; thus taking the guess work for those of us new to stills. With the Etruk distiller you can purchase the size that fits you and your budget best. The smallest size distiller will produce 40 liter batches at a time and can easily supply a weeks worth of fuel for one car. While the largest size still can churn out 150 liters in a batch and has the capacity to both supply your cars with biodiesel as well as provide you some added income.

2009 BMW 7-series leaks, possible hybrid coming in a year

BMW is certainly no fan of the new corporate average fuel economy regulations and for the most part the new fifth generation 7-series debuting this fall is a big middle finger salute to the whole premise. Nonetheless, BMW is incorporating some technology to help the fuel efficiency of its flagship. The Munich carmaker is using aluminum for much of the suspension to help reign in the mass. The 7 is also expected to eventually get either the Two-Mode or mild hybrid systems that it has in development. So far the only vehicle that BMW has committed to equipping with the Two-Mode is the X6. The 7's main competitor, the Mercedes S-class, is getting the mild hybrid system that the two companies have co-developed.

At launch however, American customers are likely to only have one engine choice, the 4.4L twin-turbo V-8 that recently debuted in the X6. Elsewhere, drivers will also have the option of six cylinder gas and diesel engines. BMW has yet to announce any diesel plans beyond the 335d and X5 that are coming this fall. Both sixes are already used in other U.S. BMW models so they could easily be added to the 7. Given the new CAFE rules, it seems likely that the hybrid and six cylinder models will come to the U.S. sooner rather than later.

The Generals

overall generals

What’s a Mopar meet without a few General Lees in attendance? A crowd-pleaser every year at the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals, several General Lee replicas braved the economy; those in attendance were commented on continuously about how close (or far) from originality each were. Two stood out:

1972 general

This little looked-over 1972 Charger SE edition…

lifted general

… And this spiffy, lofty version – which always had a crowd surrounding it (and which Strohl’s dad previously spotted in North Carolina). According to its owner, the Charger is a real ‘69 R/T which was bolted to a 1976 Dodge short-bed truck sometime in the Eighties. At the time, it was painted green and was known as “Sasquatch.” The General Lee scheme was added roughly 10 years ago, and the owner stated that he drives it everywhere. In fact, we’d venture to guess that this single General drew more people than Byron Cherry (Coy Duke, for 19 episodes), who was on-hand (along with someone playing a Hazard county cop) to sign autographs.

We can attest to the “driven everywhere” statement, as the owner also had a vendor booth and he used the lofty General to haul his trailer of goods all over the Carlisle compound all weekend long.

SIA Flashback – The Man Who Made It Work

Francis W. Davis

Can you imagine a car without power steering today, or at any time in the last 30 years? Impossible. And unlike many other modern automotive innovations, the inclusion of power steering in automobiles can more or less be traced back to one man, Francis W. Davis, who for a span of four decades made it his life’s goal to get power steering to work in an automobile. Maurice Hendry related Davis’s story is SIA #49, February 1979.

Automaker Fleet Mileage Worse Than 10 Years Ago

Fuelgauge

The average fuel economy across nine of 13 major automakers’ lineups is worse today than it was in 1996. A new study by the Consumer Federation of America points to the growth in trucks and large SUVs over that time — a factor they say outweighs the number of more economical passenger cars as the major factor for the change. As long as people keep buying trucks and SUVs in larger percentages, there’s not much automakers can do to impact a study like this.

Ford and DaimlerChrysler posted slight improvements, but GM saw a decline of .5 mpg in its fleet. Toyota — no surprise — saw a rise of 1.5 mpg over the past decade. The Consumer Federation of America is hoping this new study will force Congress to impose new mileage standards on automakers.

Caption Contest: This Week’s Winner!

First off, we’re sorry about how the comments system got all wacky about assigning people their member ID this week. In case you were unaware, computers sometimes screw things up. Fortunately, I didn’t have to try and determine a winner based on those weird number signatures, because __nes__ nailed this shot with the very first comment. Now, I’m not saying there weren’t a bunch of good entries, but “So after I get the stitches removed, is there going to be a big scar?” totally killed it. Congrats, man! Tune in tomorrow for the next installment of our fire-roasted Caption Contest!

Audi’s Up, BMW’s Down—Way Down

BMW Concept 5-series Gran Turismo

Latest earnings reports showed that Audi was the big winner in 2008, as we reported. It’s a bit of a shock to learn that BMW profits were down nearly 90% over the past year. Sales were down 37% in the U.S., a 28-year low.

Now why should this be so? The recession aside, I can think of at least two reasons: declining quality and dismal design. There has been an escalation in complaints recently about everything from electronics to transmissions and engine shut-downs. You can read the catalog here and here (regarding dealers, mostly). It’s really an appalling list.

bmw-concept-5-interiorAs to design, the company recently introduced the Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo (photos, left) at Geneva. They called it “a new look at sporting luxury mobility” that “focuses on providing elegance, space, versatility and supreme comfort in one eye-catching design.” Well, what do you think? I think it’s a beast from any angle, as befits one of Chris Bangle’s last designs.

bmw-concept-5-rear

Taller and longer than the 5 Series on which it’s based, the GT is reportedly close to production—in which case, BMW’s downturn is likely to continue.

Come on, guys/gals, we know you love BMWs, but would you buy one of the company’s new GTs?

Full GMC Acadia Pricing and Options Are Here

Gmcacadia

Cars.com has just finished posting the full pricing and option information for the all-new 2007 GMC Acadia full-size crossover. The Acadia continues to be a hotly discussed vehicle — at least for a family hauler — and we figured blog readers might want to see how they could equip the crossover any way they want before it goes on sale later this year.

Cars.com allows you to build and configure any new car, so take the Acadia for a spin. We were able to deck out a top-of-the-line SLT-2 model with all-wheel drive, navigation, rear DVD system and a two-panel sunroof, and came up with an MSRP of $44,040. Are we the only ones who do that when building cars on automotive sites? Also, it doesn't appear the Acadia comes in black.

Ford Hauling Four F-150 Specials To SEMA [Sema]

Ford has four special editions of its brand-new 2009 F-150 they're bringing out to Vegas for the 2008 SEMA show. First and foremost, the DeWalt Contractor Concept tacks on the expected exterior off-road upgrades but also adds thoughtful touches like a tool charger in the center console, storage under the rear seat and Ford's tool tracking system to make sure your chop saw doesn't walk away. The Ford Hi-Pa Drive F-150 takes hybrids to the next level with in-wheel electric motors, while X-Treme Toyz and Street Scene Equipment will also each be customizing the new F-series to their own unique clients' tastes. We'll show you all of 'em when we're live from SEMA next week; in the meantime, Ford presser below the jump.

FORD TO SHOWCASE NEW F-150'S VERSATILITY AT SEMA

DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 28, 2008 – America's best-selling pickups for 31 consecutive years are also the most accessorized vehicles in the aftermarket, and this year's Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show brings new options aplenty for the 2009 Ford F-150.

Four F-150 project trucks – running the gamut from a rolling work shop to a functional fun machine – debut at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, which runs Nov. 4-7.

The F-150 Heavy Duty DEWALT Contractor Concept was designed to be the "ultimate contractor's truck," according to Jennifer Ervin, director of Business Development for DEWALT.

"At DEWALT, we are obsessed with developing innovative solutions for the professional contractor that will deliver productivity on the job site," she said. "We have thoroughly thought through how a contractor uses his or her truck on the job, and we've worked hard to integrate every application into the truck."

The DEWALT Contractor includes features such as a built-in charger for battery-powered tools that is hidden in the center console, a customized storage area beneath the second-row seat and Ford Works Solutions™ Tool Link™ from DEWALT.

"Tool Link will enable contractors to know if they have the right tools for the job in the truck when they leave in the morning, and it also helps prevent loss of tools at the end of the day," said Ervin.

Mike Duval, owner of X'Treme Toyz, had something else in mind for the F-150 he dubbed "Fahrenheit F-150°."

"I ride motorcycles, mountain bikes and four wheelers, and I like to go camping," he said. "I wanted to transform the truck into a functional, fun vehicle for outdoorsmen like myself."

In addition to "hot flame" exterior graphics, the Fahrenheit F-150° includes features including a 9,000 lb. winch hidden behind the license plate at the front and rear of the truck; a bike rack across the top rail; and a Bedslide sliding cargo drawer equipped with a toolbox, tire and small compressor.

"You can basically put all of your toys in the truck, hook up the trailer and go," said Duval. "And with the winch on both ends of the truck, you can get pulled in either direction if you get stuck."

Duval says he usually "goes crazy" with the interiors of his show cars, but he didn't see a reason to tamper with the interior of the 2009 F-150.

"I didn't do a whole lot to the interior because the factory did such a fantastic job with the vehicle right out of the gate," he said. "It's got a great stereo system, Ford SYNC™ and a variety of other creature comforts."

In addition to a well-appointed interior, the 2009 F-150 offers customizers like Duval a variety of different options straight from the factory to build upon. The vehicle is available with three cab styles, four box options and seven unique trim levels — a total of 35 different configurations in all.

Ford Designer Melvin Betancourt says he believes the F-150 is so popular in the aftermarket because in addition to all the "built-in" options available on the vehicle, there are still countless ways for customization enthusiasts to change it up.

"Whether it's adding big tires for off-roading or lowering the truck to give it more of a street performance look, the F-150 is like a blank canvas that you can do almost anything with," said Betancourt. "It all depends on the personality of the owner."

The 2009 Ford F-150s featured at this year's SEMA show include:

2009 Ford F-150 Heavy Duty DEWALT Contractor
When there is a job to do, Ford F-Series trucks are the leading choice for the men and women who need to get it done. The 2009 Ford F-150 continues this work truck leadership with even more capability and smart pickup features than ever before.

The Heavy Duty DEWALT Contractor turns the 2009 F-150 into the ultimate tough truck for any job site with features that will drive productivity and help contractors achieve their peak performance. This rugged, durable, hard-working truck is equipped with powertrain mods to improve performance and efficiency plus a long list of custom features that turn it into a rolling work shop. To ensure that they have the right tool at their fingertips for any job, contractors can effectively store and manage their tool inventory through Tool Link and Customized On Board Storage.

2009 Ford F-150 FX-4 by X-Treme Toyz
The 2009 Ford F-150 FX-4 is "Built Ford Tough" for hard work or for rough play. Starting with this extremely capable pickup X-Treme Toyz turns up the heat with its "Fahrenheit F-150."

This highly functional fun machine is totally tricked out for the active outdoor lifestyle enthusiast. With a radically rugged-looking exterior, a luxuriously refined interior plus a full array of functional upgrades and accessories, this truck will put true weekend warriors in the zone. It lets them play rough all day, hose off the mud, then hit the nightspots in style.

2009 Ford F-150 by Street Scene Equipment
The new Ford F-150 Lariat is built for those who don't believe in compromises. It combines "Built Ford Tough" performance and capability with a surprising level of comfort and luxury.

Drawing on years of experience and success in the sport truck market, Street Scene Equipment has taken the no-compromise attitude of the 2009 F-150 Lariat Supercrew to the next level. The result is the perfect combination of head-turning style and tough performance with the level of comfort now expected by today's demanding truck owners. Whether it's putting in a hard day at work, towing a large boat to the lake for a weekend of family fun or a taking friends to a black tie event, the Ford F-150 by Street Scene will get you noticed and get you there in comfort and luxury.

Hi-Pa Drive™ F-150
What's been taken out of this Ford F-150 hinges on what's been put in. The engine, drive train, gear box and all the related parts have been replaced it with the game-changing Hi-Pa Drive™ system. The four electric in-wheel motors that power the fully-electric Hi-Pa Drive F-150 will deliver more than 600 horsepower as well as more torque than the 320 horsepower V-8 engine it replaced. Hi-Pa Drive is helping car designers eliminate oil dependency, carbon emissions and costs, while adding more power, room, performance and design options.

More Affordable Mopars

Why do I keep posting pictures of affordable cars? Like many, the depth of my disposable income resides in the “kiddie pool” territory for the moment, which is not good if you have the desire to build a stash of usable, drivable collector cars. As was the case with the Spring Meet, the Chrysler Nationals at Carlisle did not disappoint those on a budget.

1961 Plymouth

Such as this 1961 Plymouth Fury. Powered by the 361 Golden Commando, the detail-free window card featured a $6,500 asking price.

1965 Chrysler

Then there was this 1965 Chrysler New Yorker sedan. With just 50,000 showing on the odometer, a ton of power option and a bunch of new mechanical parts present (including dual exhaust), the 413-cube powered Pentastar carried an asking price of $7,950 or best offer.

1966 Chrysler

Right next to the ‘65 was this 1966 Chrysler Newport. Nearly equally loaded – except for the 383 under the hood here – the same seller was asking for the same $7,950 for this two-door hardtop.

1978 Chrysler

If that wasn’t enough, you should have been there to check out this 1978 Chrysler Newport. Equipped with a 440, air, cruise control, power seat and an advertised 66,000 original miles, $5,995 – or likely a lesser, yet reasonable, offer – would have landed this Mopar in the sold column (wonder if it did, actually).

1982 Rampage

Finally, there was this now rarely seen 1982 Rampage. Though terribly short on details (none, in fact), the $7,500 price tag was an eye catcher.

So let’s quickly review: The ‘61 Fury, ‘65 New Yorker and ‘66 Newport were all priced according to current value in their presented condition. It could be argued that the ‘78 Newport was a touch high, but still quite reasonable, whereas the Rampage was quite a stretch. But then again, when was the last time you saw a like-new Rampage?
