2009 Ford Mondeo Tuned By Reiger, Elevated To “Shaggin’ Wagon” Status

German auto tuning haus, Reiger, has released an aftermarket styling package for the 2009 Ford Mondeo, successfully upgrading it from grocery getter to gangster getter [alright, so maybe I'm exaggerating for the sake of alliteration, but it's a cool mod kit regardless]. Updated without being ridiculously over accessorized [here's to looking at you, Honda aftermarket outfitters], the Reiger body kit for the Ford Mondeo features a new front lip, side skirts with custom cut out vents, and a rear diffuser - available in three different variations [depending on the exhaust configuration]. Not visible on the exterior, additional enhancements include a KW tuned coilover suspension and ECU-modifying SKU chip upgrades.

A Look at some of the North American Solar Challenge Cars

The University of Michigan team was first across the finish line back on July 22 after a long, hot 10-day 2,400-mile (4,000 km) race from Plano, Texas to Calgary, Alberta. The North American Solar Challenge pits various schools against each other to see who can build the fastest, most efficeint solar car.

This year, 15 solar-powered cars built by students from universities in the U.S., Canada, and Germany completed.

Michigan has won five out of nine NASC races, held every other year since 1990. On sunny days with clear skies, the 2,500 aerospace-grade gallium arsenide solar cells on the winning car, Continuum, produce about as much power as a hair dryer.

Continuum averaged 46 mph and was in the lead from start till the finish. But all the cars look like spaceships.

Honda Teases Us with Promise of a New NSX in 2010

Honda lets slip out its intention of building a new NSX for the year 2010, but this does not fall long after expectations were raised with a similar indication for 2008-2009. However, even false promises will not keep most NSX fans from feeding their own excitement with such news. The original NSX is still one of the most respected sports cars on the road and due to its rarity in many areas still turns heads to this day.

Acura displayed what it was calling the Advanced Sports Car Concept this year and some speculated that it would be the framework for the next NSX, but Acura has since announced that they were pulling back their concept for a redesign. And thus hope wained again.

Tokyo Motor Show: Toyota goes unconventional with Hi-CT Plug-In Concept Trucklet

Toyota’s design team has broken themselves from nearly all automotive conventions and is stepping out of the box…  well, stepping out of the conventional box to create a new box entirely. The Toyota Hi-CT plug-in concept is a 4-seater (those back seats are in there somewhere) plug-in hybrid truck-type-thing. The Hi-TC is part of Toyota’s study of environmental concepts and new designs that might better fit the new hybrid technologies. While the Hi-CT is highly unconventional it is intentionally so. New technologies often do not fit so well in old packages.

Manhattan to get Big Brother style traffic control

The Mayor of New York has definitely begun his war waged on the drivers of the city. Plans are in the making for a new and slightly worrying system, which will block drivers of suspicious vehicles.

It will work like this. Over 3000 car license plate recognition equipped cameras will track vehicles as the drive through the city; any vehicle that the cameras pick up will be automatically checked against the database held by the authorities. We already know that CCTV cameras located around city and in fact almost every major city in the world can do this. But here is the difference. Gates will be placed at key junctions and locations, which will be activated should a vehicle pop up on the screen at the base. These gates will block the vehicle and most likely every other car that is in the vicinity until the New York Police Dept can get there and deal with the vehicle.

The police say that this will be used to combat terrorism, but has this been thought out clearly? What about the traffic? To be more precise, can you imagine being trapped in traffic with a car that is suspected of being involved in some sort of terrorist act?

This is very likely to cause many scenes of public disorder if people believe that there is a vehicle and occupants who might be terrorists or just have not paid their congestion charge. If this system goes ahead and it does look like it will in some form or other, the general public will find themselves being observed and scrutinized more than ever. But in this day and age, when the public is demanding security, what are the authorities to do?

Luke’s land speeder found in car pound

Yes it is totally true; a land speeder has been spotted in a police car pound in Cedar Grove, Florida. The high performance vehicle whose owners have included Coca Cola and one Luke Skywalker, which is a strange combination but you know how it goes.

The vehicle dates back to the 1980’s (Earth Time) and was originally built for the famous soft drink firm Coca Cola as a promotional vehicle for the product. It is built onto a VW chassis and engine, when the vehicle was being used it was called Coke One!

It is believed that during the 1980’s the vehicle disappeared from public view, which must have been when Luke Skywalker was using it! But suddenly reappeared during 1995, it was at that time when it was actually donated to the Cedar Grove Police Dept, where it has remained ever since.

The local Police Chief Guy Turcotte is planning on getting the land speeder to work again, the body is an ok condition and the engine needs a little work on it to get it working again. Once the car is fully operational it will be put up for auction, and seeing how other famous movie vehicles are doing at auction, there probably will not be a better time to get a great price for this famous vehicle.
