Updated SSC Ultimate Aero boasts 1287 hp, claimed top speed of 270 mph

Not content to rest on its laurels after taking the Guinness-verified top speed world record, SSC has revamped the Ultimate Aero for 2009 to make it more powerful, more aerodynamic, and even faster. We thought the 2008 model had plenty of horsepower with 1183 ponies underneath the hood, but SSC has increased that number to 1287 courtesy of a new one-piece billet aluminum engine block that improves structural integrity and oiling capabilities. Helping to push all that horsepower through the air is a redesigned front fascia with a new center grille opening, as well as carbon fiber louvers that feed 20% more air to the radiators. The aerodynamic changes, combined with the increased power, yield an estimated 270 mph top speed. SSC has also given the interior a thorough refresh, adding carbon fiber trim to the dash, air vents, door sills, and around the gauge cluster. A new center console features an Azentek PC Infotainment system that can process the car's onboard diagnostic system. There's no word on whether they'll attempt to best their top speed record achieved earlier this year, but we're sure SSC would like to further distance themselves from the Bugatti Veyron or the 9ff GT9. More details on the 2009 SSC Ultimate Aero can be found in the press release after the jump.

Hemp powered vehicles

Hemp is a controversial material, part of the famous family of plants known as Cannabis Sativa. Hemp grown for industrial use is very low in THC the psychoactive chemical in its famous sister marijuana thus making industrial hemp useless as a drug.

Ironically, Hemp powered cars was the dream of both Henry Ford and Rudolf Diesel. However, gasoline powered engines became so cheap to manufacturer and were easy to maintain so they caught on in the automotive industry even though the pioneers had other dreams.

What Car Looks Best After Sunset? [Question Of The Day]

Most attractive cars are designed to stand out in the brightness of day or under an array of flashbulbs and klieg lights, but there are a few that stand out when it gets darker. Sometimes it's intentional, like the way the headlights of an Audi creates a pleasant shape around the nose or the way a well-designed taillight highlights a car's shoulders. Sometimes it's the way a waxed car can pick up the bright neon lights of a commercial strip, reflecting the bright colors of an active society. But the best looking cars at night are the ones shaped in such a way that they shine in the absence of light. Just a hint of the yellow glow of sodium lights in a dark alley and the car explodes with shapes and meaning like the backdrop of a German Expressionist film from the 1920s. We love it and we suspect you do as well. What car looks best after sunset?

We're partial the site of a 1973 Lotus Europa as the sun goes down. The site of a shiny black European car bouncing back the last beams of another day in human history is a reminder we're meant for progress. The soft creases of the hood bend the sinking sun and the atmosphere provides enough illumination to provide a mirrored whisper of the surroundings.

Four-Links – stolen MGs, restored RC buggy, that’ll buff out, Tremulis rememberances

three stolen MGs

* Three MGs – an Old English White MGB roadster, a Flame Red MGB GT, and a black MGB GT – were stolen in the span of one week from one garage in the U.K. earlier this month. If you see ‘em, do the right thing. (via)

restored Tamiya Super Champ RC

* We’ve featured tether cars here, so why not the logical evolution – vintage RC cars? So the question is whether there’s a sense of nostalgia for ‘em, and judging from Flickr member kiksuu’s restoration of a Tamiya Super Champ, there is indeed. (via)

That Will Buff Out

* We’re digging That Will Buff Out, a relatively new blog full of photos of cars, such as the Citroen above, in, er, compromising positions.

Alfa Romeo 8C Competiziones popping up Stateside

Click above for high-res gallery of pics of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

It looks like the rest of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competiziones are starting to get into customer hands since that first one was delivered to James Glickenhaus. Last weekend at Motor4Toys we just missed a red one, but it happened to show up this morning at our weekly gathering in Irvine, California. The car drew a huge crowd, who universally praised it for its voluptuous good looks and gorgeous red paint job. The owner drove in and parked, revving it a bit to treat the onlookers. Although we've had the great pleasure of seeing the car in person a few times already, it is still stunning. And it was fun to watch the others seeing it for the first time. This is truly mobile art. Drew and Jonathon happened to be at the show this morning as well and are trying to convince the owner to let them take it for a spin. Hopefully they get their wish, but until then, check out the gallery to see some of my pics along with Drew's typical photographic magic.

Pontiac G8 Commercial brings BMW 5-Series Face-Off into the Open

pontiacg8vsBMW550i.jpg picture by willfusion

In an article just the other day we briefly discussed Pontiac’s wish to challenge BMW’s grip as what some believe to be the top sedan builder on the market. Well now they are making the fight personal with their latest commercial: Pontiac G8 GT vs BMW 550i. The first mention of such a comparison came in an Automobile Magazine article that pitted the cars against one another and actually reported favorably on the Pontiac G8 GT.

Both brands have been around long enough for drivers to build up a personal reflex to the mere image of the two auto makers grill. One instills a sense of breeding and sophistication, along with a sense for many of “I can’t afford that.” The other references to a long gone age of Excitement and a recent age of plastic interiors and average looks, or more poignantly a sense of “I’m not buying that!”

Pontiac’s new G8 GT, based off the Holden Commodore and rousing 361-hp, is GM’s attempt at a return of some of that Excitement and a reaching out for a new sense of class in cockpit styling. While it is going to take a lot of years to reverse the conditioned response of many car buyers to the Pontiac grill, the G8 GT is at least making an aggressive stab at it.

But do not rely solely on our estimation here… Check out the Pontiac commercial to follow the leap and see if they can convince you. If nothing else, enjoy the laugh as American advertisers are still able to achieve what American auto designers struggle at: Catching our Attention. (more…)
